Osteoporosis treatment
  • What is it?

Osteoporosis refers to the fact that for some of us our bone density decreases with age. This can make bones weaker and more susceptible to injury or fractures. It is generally, a pain free condition, until you sustain a broken bone or stress reaction to the bone. Most commonly it affects the spine and hips but may be picked up after an upper limb injury as a result of a fall.

  • Why does it happen?

As with many musculoskeletal conditions osteoporosis it is multifactorial.

It is more common in women than men and it is also more common after menopause. We know that hormones like oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone have a strong role to play in bone and soft tissue health, and these hormones decrease after menopause. We also think there is a genetic component.

Other health condition like autoimmune and malabsorption issues can increase the risk of osteoporosis. As can long term steroid use. There is also an association with lifestyle factors such as living a sedentary lifestyle, excessive alcohol intake and smoking.
